Prolific and perceptive, David Craig—in EVERY TONGUE CONFESS—once again ushers us into “the other places [that] still live inside us,” those spaces where God has “risen in your body, because that is what He does.” With feet planted firmly in a world of musicians, plumbers, artists, Church Fathers, mailmen, and neighbors, Craig’s is a story of struggle, but one in which he always pushes forward. In one poem, he runs smack into “We are saved, but only for as long as we are not”; in another “The Mass burns in everyone. It’s where they live.”

What particularly strikes me in these poems is the poet’s humility. “What can a servant do but follow?” he asks, and his path and pen lead us again and again past our own shortcomings and mortality to reunion with the Divine. “He has a name,” Craig tells us, “and He shall be called ‘Answer.’”

On the poet’s journey to this the final “Answer,” he gets “his lines/colors” like Monet “from [the] other side,” his inspiration to keep going from glimpses of the spiritual within the everyday, whether that be through marriage, meditations on the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene, through travel, or through reading. Ultimately, he encourages us to “count our blessings—on what might be fingers” because, these poems tell us, God has “places for those of little use./Hope was made specifically for people like us.” May such poems strengthen and sustain us, and—as poet David Craig exclaims—“May our lives shower His in the doing.”
